Moray MP Douglas Ross has acted on complaints from residents who say that detour routes to avoid a bridge closure are prone to flooding and not gritted often enough.
Drivers have been forced to take diversions away from the closed Foths Bridge for more than a year now.
Instead, motorists have been advised to take the Trochail Road as an alternative route.
Mr Ross has received many complaints from residents in the Birnie area who say that the routes are often flooded or icy due to a lack of gritting.
He has previously urged the council to act more swiftly with repairs to Foths Bridge, after it was suggested a solution may be several years away.
Following an intervention from the local MP, Moray Council has said this week that it will pump away flooded water and carry out work to build up the road level above surrounding fields.
Scottish Conservative MP for Moray Douglas Ross said:
“I’ve received lots of complaints from residents in the Birnie area about the state of the roads around the village.
“Flooding has been reported as a major issue, and I have seen for myself some of the photos showing the current state of the roads.
“In the middle of winter, these roads can be treacherous at the best of times, and there is also concern that council gritters are not getting out often enough.
“Given the ongoing closure of Foths Bridge, drivers have little option but to travel on these roads.
“I raised these concerns with Moracy Council on behalf of the residents affected. I am pleased to say that the council has responded positively and has agreed to pump away flood water and work to raise the level of the road so that it is less prone to flooding.
“While this is welcome, I still believe the best long-term solution is to get Foths Bridge fixed and re-opened as a matter of urgency.
“I will keep the pressure on the council until there is some action on this.”
