Action needed on Spey flood risk
Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston has called for action to alleviate the risk of flooding in Garmouth and surrounding areas.
The Conservative MSP recently met with local residents who are concerned that, with the river’s flow moving westward, their homes in and around the village will see incidents of flooding only increase.
Having visited the sites himself, Mr Halcro Johnston has now written to Savills, who manage the land on behalf of the Crown Estate Scotland, raising local residents concerns and requesting a meeting with the Crown Estates representatives to discuss possible solutions.
Jamie Halcro Johnston MSP said:
“This is a long-standing problem for residents around Garmouth and one that they would like to see resolved as soon as possible.
“The Spey has experienced movement for many years, widening the areas affected by flooding next to the village. There have been plenty of proposals that would be inexpensive to implement and which could dramatically reduce the risk of flooding for nearby homes.
“These issues are not new; they were being raised as far back as when I was a parliamentary candidate in Moray in 2005. Yet little seems to have been done to secure the safety of people’s properties.
“It is high time that a solution is found which allows local people to enjoy their homes in the confidence that they are not at risk of flooding every time the Spey is running high”.
