Local Councillor Tim Eagle has praised news that the council are planning to use money from the Placed based investment programme to spruce up Buckie Harbour in preparation for a bright future. Officers will ask councillors at a meeting of the full council next week to agree a spend of three quarters of a million pounds to buy unused and derelict properties along the harbour.
Local Councillor Tim Eagle commented:
“This is excellent news for Buckie. The harbour is a major part of our economy locally but also a huge part of our history. I have had many discussions with harbour users and locals who would love to see the harbour busy with a wide variety of work.
"Many will know that a significant review was undertaken a few years ago as part of the local outcome improvement plan. Local people highlighted at that time the importance of the harbour and about local employment opportunities. I have since becoming a councillor championed the harbour in the council, seeking investment from Moray Council and supporting an earlier plan which was part of the Moray Growth Deal.
"At present around 2.5GW capacity has been granted for wind development in the Moray Firth, but there is a whopping 5GW still be decided over the next 10 years. Moray Council are currently in discussion with major organisations in the continued hope that Buckie could play a significant role in the land based support for this.
"This investment will allow the council to look at the options of buying some of the unused and derelict buildings in the harbour area so we can work with local users and the wider community to prepare for what may be a very exciting future.
"I look forward to working with local people and officers on these possibilities and how we ensure it works for everyone in Buckie."
