Moray Conservatives welcome the news that Buckie businesses have been short listed for the upcoming Fishing News Awards which covers the whole UK & Ireland.
The Real McKay & Karl Thomsen have been short listed for the Service Company of the year award. As there are only 5 finalists, this is a huge boost for Buckie to have 2 out of the final 5.
Also, short listed in the boat of the year award is the new fishing boat Caledonia lll, first boat built in Buckie for a Buckie owner for 30 years.
Tim Eagle (Scottish Conservative Councillor for Buckie) said:
“This is great news for the town and recognises the very real importance of these nominees to the UK fishing industry. These firms, based locally, put Buckie and Moray very firmly on the map as they service customers across the whole country and it is very clear that it is their commitment to first class customer service that has seen them nominated for these awards.
“The Real McKay vehicles are a regular sight across the northeast and beyond transporting seafood of the finest quality to markets further afield and play a vital part in ensuring that our first class fish are delivered timely from catch to the diners plate.”
Douglas Ross (Conservative MP for Moray) added:
“It is fantastic for our local companies to be recognised across the whole UK & Ireland and this is very much a credit to the dedication of our northeast workforce to the fishing industry. Although the industry itself faces uncertainty as Brexit moves ever closer these nominees display an ongoing commitment to the local economy.
“Karl Thomsen has been involved in the fishing industry all his working years and he shares that knowledge and commitment through training youngsters in the skills which will see Buckie continue to provide first class products and services across the whole country hopefully for many years to come.”
“For the first vessel to be built in Buckie for a local skipper in over 30 years (BCK 35) to be recognised in the New Boat of the Year – Demersal category, shows a welcome recognition of the port which was very well known over the last century and more for producing some of the finest fishing vessels.
“Tim and I send our very best wishes to all three entrants and would encourage people to register their vote which closes at midnight on Thursday 18th April.
“With the results being announced at the Fishing News gala awards dinner in Aberdeen on May 16th we hope that it will be a good night for Buckie and the three nominees.”
There are 14 categories for the 2019 Fishing News Awards. Each one recognises excellence within an aspect of commercial fishing in the UK and/or Ireland from January-December 2018.
