Both the UK and Scottish Governments have announced several support measures for individuals as the country continues to fight against the effects of COVID-19.
Commenting on the current situation is Cllr Tim Eagle who said: “For many this situation is very difficult, not being able to meet loved ones, being confined to your house or being worried about money are just some common issues I am hearing about.
The UK government has announced several measures of support for struggling individuals including an increase of £20 a week on top of the annual increase, which works out at more than £1000 a year, to universal credit which jumps the monthly standard allowance for a single adult over 25 to £409.89 as well as relaxing the requirements around the minimum income floor for the self-employed who need to apply for universal credit. Moray has already seen an increase in those applying for Universal Credit and staff are working hard to progress applications as quickly as possible. More information and the application process can be found online.
In Scotland we also have the Scottish Welfare Fund which is provided by Moray Council on behalf of the Scottish Government. This fund has 2 parts with both a crisis grant for those seeking help with emergency living expenses and a community care grant for those who need help to live independently in the community. The important thing to remember is the Scottish Welfare fund is open to anyone, you do not have to be on benefits to claim and its works in emergency situations like COVID-19 where some people have sadly lost work or income. This grant can help with things like food and heating costs whilst other benefits or support is put into place.
COVID-19 has caused a radical change in our communities but it is really important that everyone knows there is support out there. If you are facing financial hardship because of COVID-19 then do please contact Moray Council or one of your local councillors who can help point you in the right direction.
