Halcro Johnston signs new Sea of Opportunity pledge
Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston has signed the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation’s new Sea of Opportunity Brexit pledge.
The pledge commits parliamentarians to back Scotland’s fishing community and ensure that the UK emerges from Brexit as an independent coastal state with full sovereignty over its own waters.
The Conservative MSP has also challenged other MPs and MSPs in the region to sign the promise.
Jamie Halcro Johnston said:
“Fishing is an important industry in the Highlands and Islands, and I am committed to ensuring that the promises made to our fishermen are upheld.
“I have long campaigned for our fisheries to be outside of the hated Common Fisheries Policy, and we now have the opportunity to make sure that happens.
“The UK Government has committed to uphold the rights of Scottish fishermen and the current draft withdrawal agreement would see the UK take up its role as an independent coastal state following Brexit.
“I am ambitious about the future of our fishing industry. So I urge all MPs and MSPs, of whatever party, to respect its important role in our region, back local fishermen and join me in signing the pledge.”
