Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston has welcomed the Prime Minister’s commitment to seeking a resolution to US tariffs on Scotch whisky.
Boris Johnson made the commitment at Prime Minister’s Questions while answering a question put by Scottish Conservative MP David Mundell.
Mr Halcro Johnston said: “It is completely unjust that American consumers should pay extra in order to enjoy a dram of malt because of a dispute between the EU and the US over aviation.
“I welcome the robust line that the prime minister is taking to sort this out once and for all.
“It’s certainly clear that the bureaucrats in Brussels can’t be relied upon to defend our whisky industry anymore than they care about our fishermen.
“I wish the Prime Minister every success in sorting this mess out as distilleries across my region stand to benefit very significantly from a growth in exports to the USA which is such an important market.”
