Local Conservatives have backed Moray Council’s new climate change strategy following a full council meeting today.
The council declared a climate emergency last year and since then a cross-party working group has worked with partners throughout Moray to develop a new strategy and action plan to reduce Moray Council’s carbon emissions to net zero by 2030.
Commenting is leader of the Conservative group and Holyrood candidate for Moray, Cllr Tim Eagle:
“I recognise the importance of climate change and already take personal action to help like driving an electric car. However, we need to ensure that all of us do what we can and that this is supported by local and national government.
“The UK has some of the most ambitious climate change targets in the world and councils will want to emulate that, but to do so with the ambition we seek requires a significant financial pot.
“As of now we have not see the SNP pass on the money to match their proposals around climate change. If they truly want Scotland to lead in this area then that money needs to flow from Scottish Government to councils so we can target that as much as possible to help. I am pleased the council leader recognised this today and has said he will write to the Scottish Government to find out more about support.”
Further commenting is Cllr Claire Feaver (Forres) who has been a member of the cross-party group -
“The importance of delivering sustained action on this plan cannot be understated. It is vital that we as a council act to reduce our own impacts, but more than this we must be the enabler of change across Moray, working in and with all communities and businesses to seek solutions.
“Vitally important is our schools. We should ensure that recognising the importance of our environment and biodiversity is a core part of the curriculum.”
“Since becoming a councillor I have advocated for delivering a planning system which complements our natural environment. We now need to ensure we deliver this whilst working in partnership with our local businesses.
“This cannot be just another SNP grandstanding event; our country, our children are relying on us to get this right.
