Moray at bottom of broadband speed table
Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston has highlighted concerns following research by consumer affairs organisation Which? showing Moray had the slowest broadband speeds of any mainland local authority in Scotland.
The Scottish Government is responsible for broadband roll-out and in 2016 committed to making superfast broadband available to every home and business in Scotland. However in September, public spending watchdog Audit Scotland said that it would be “difficult for the Scottish Government to deliver its ambitions” by the 2021 target.
Commenting, Jamie Halcro Johnston said:
“I am disappointed that we are seeing yet more evidence that Moray has some of the slowest broadband speeds measured across the UK.
“In recent years we have seen the demands placed on broadband connections increase as the number of devices and streaming services required for homes and business grow. For many, however, connections here have been slow and unreliable.
“Rightly, this is a matter of real concern for people across the Highlands and Islands. Customers in Moray are continuing to get a raw deal because of a lack of investment in infrastructure.
“That needs to change and should be an absolute priority for any Scottish Government.”
