Portknockie resident Laura Powell has been announced as the Scottish Conservative and Unionist candidate to contest the upcoming Keith and Cullen by-election.
Ms Powell has a wide range of experience in local government and is involved with local groups in Portknockie.
Commenting on her bid to become the next councillor for Keith and Cullen, Laura said, “As a Portknockie resident, I love the people and the Keith and Cullen area, it is such a wonderful place to stay.
“I hope that my experience working within a local authority and before that running a Post Office has given me a wide range of skills that have prepared me for being your Councillor. I know how a local authority works and how to get things done. At this by-election it is vitally important that the new Councillor is able to hit the ground running.
“I look forward to campaigning over the next few weeks and would be honoured to be elected so I can be a strong voice for Keith and Cullen.”
Moray MP Douglas Ross added: “I’m delighted we have Laura as our local candidate who will be a great voice for the Keith and Cullen area. We’ve already been out knocking on doors and response has confirmed that people are unhappy with the performance and decisions of the local SNP led council and want an alternative voice representing them. They don’t want another SNP member who will do whatever Nicola Sturgeon or their group on the council tell them to.
“Laura is heavily involved in local issues and will be a great champion for Keith and Cullen.”
Moray Council Conservative Group Leader and the Conservative candidate for Moray at the 2021 Scottish Parliament Election, Tim Eagle looks forward to working closely with Powell throughout her campaign.
Commenting, Tim stated, “I am very much looking forward to working with Laura throughout her campaign, and if elected during her time as Keith and Cullen Councillor. She has a wealth of knowledge about the local area which will be invaluable to the people she seeks to represent. I would encourage everyone in the Keith and Cullen Ward to get behind her as she will be an excellent addition to Moray Council.”
Mark Findlater, the Conservative candidate for Banff and Buchan Coast - which includes the Cullen area - at the upcoming Scottish Parliament election, has also endorsed Powell’s candidacy.
Findlater said, “From Laura's wide breadth of experience working in the Public Sector she will be a cracking choice of a Councillor for the folk of Keith and Cullen. Lovely to talk to and a good listener I can see Laura being an excellent voice for the constituents of this Ward in Moray Council”
