Moray MP calls for footpath at Fogwatt
Moray MP Douglas Ross is calling for a footpath to be constructed alongside the A941 near Fogwatt after safety calls were again raised by concerned residents.
Commenting after meeting with Willie Duncan who represents Fogwatt and Birnie on Heldon Community Council who have been campaigning on the issue, Douglas said: “Residents in Fogwatt are extremely anxious about road safety on the A941 and you can see for yourself that there is a real issue here. I previously raised this when I was a councillor for the area, but there has been little or no progress over the years.
“I wrote to HITRANS and BEAR Scotland to ask them to look urgently at the current situation, because it is clear from walking along the side of the road myself that having to use a grass verge is putting pedestrians at risk.
“I’m pleased HITRANS have responded in a very constructive way and I hope it will be possible to get everyone round the table to discuss and plan for the construction of a pedestrian path here.
“This is a fast bit of road but even with a reduced speed limit and the introduction of street lights the dangers still exist. A proper pavement is needed to allow local people to safely reach the bus stops including the ones used by children for school bus pick-ups.
“There may be an opportunity to use some windfarm funding and with other grants available I hope we can find a way to make this happen.”
Speaking on behalf of Heldon Community Council, Willie Duncan added: “Part of our role is to look at the safety of all who live and work in this rural area. One major concern is the busy A941 Elgin – Rothes trunk road which cuts through the heart of Fogwatt and acts as a conduit for heavy transport delivering goods to the Elgin area.
“Road safety is a priority not only for vehicle drivers but for the public who walk along the grass verge whether that be going to the post box or the bus stops and there are also a number of minor roads which join the A941 in Fogwatt and are proving to be hazardous. Over the years there has been a speed restriction of 50mph provided along with street lights which helps, however one way forward would be the provision of a foot path running the length of Fogwatt and we are currently speaking to a number of partners and organisations to try and make this happen.”
Douglas concluded: “I very much share Willie’s concerns that something needs to be done here because at the moment pedestrians are relying on a track worn though the grass by continued use. This just isn’t safe and it is unthinkable to imagine an accident happening when it could have been prevented. You can’t put a price on the safety of people walking in this area.”
