Moray MP praises Burghead Clavie tradition in Parliament
Moray MP Douglas Ross brought the Burning of the Clavie onto the floor of the House of Commons today when he highlighted the event during business questions.
Douglas said: “The Burning of the Clavie in Burghead is an amazing event that celebrates an ancient Pictish tradition, and every year the Clavie King and his crew ensure it is kept alive with a spectacular and well-attended event. This requires a lot of work and logistics and I wanted to celebrate this tradition with other MPs and highlight what this means to the local community.
“I was delighted that the Leader of the House of Commons agreed with me that the Clavie was worthy of praise and other Members of the House of Commons seemed to agree and were amazed at the fact that a barrel of burning tar is carried through the village to bring in the New Year. Indeed, many commented that it sounded like a great night out and they’re not wrong.
“I’m looking forward to being there this year when Clavie King Dan Ralph and his crew bring this fantastic tradition alive once again.
“I also want to offer my congratulations to Dan Ralph, and everyone involved, for the effort they put into the Clavie each year.”
