A local bus service in Forres that was reinstated after a local campaign has proved to be “extremely popular”, according to a review by Moray Council.
Moray MP Douglas Ross fought alongside the local community following the withdrawal of a previous Stagecoach service for Forbeshill.
The local council stepped in with a trial service operating between 8.40am and 4.40pm, which started on February 24 this year.
A report to the local authority’s economic growth, housing and environmental sustainability committee this week has said it is “difficult to accurately measure growth in passenger numbers due to Covid-19”, but the service had proved “extremely popular”.
Scottish Conservative MP for Moray Douglas Ross said:
“I am very pleased to hear that this service is proving so popular.
“That is exactly why we fought so hard to replace the previous service when it was cut.
“It was clear there was a big demand for return services each day from Forbeshill to the town centre and Forres health centre.
“After Stagecoach refused to re-instate the route, I wrote to Moray Council to ask if they could provide a service and I was delighted when they agreed.
“This report is a vindication of the campaign. Once we get past the disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic, I hope that we can see some detailed figures to show exactly how often this service is being used.”
Scottish Conservative councillor for Forres Claire Feaver said:
“The loss of the Stagecoach service from Forbeshill was a real blow to the local community.
“Without a bus service, many older people had to rely on taxis or other people to drive them to the shops or doctors.
“The loss of services like this can increase isolation and loneliness, so I was very pleased that Moray Council was able to provide an alternative service.
“This report makes clear that was the right decision and the bus service has been a great success. As long as the demand is there, then this service should remain in place.”
