Moray MP Douglas Ross has expressed his concerns after being contacted by residents in the Garmouth area who are concerned that the River Spey is set to burst its banks following heavy and prolonged periods of rainfall over the last few days.
Commenting Douglas said: “I have again contacted Moray Council asking them what support they are putting in place for residents who are concerned that the already high River Spey could burst its banks once more which would be devastating for local people.
“Residents have told me they are very worried, and were waiting for sandbags to be delivered, but are naturally worried for their safety and for their houses.
“This issue of flooding in the Garmouth area is becoming more and more regular and the residents need more than words to assist them going forward. They need reassurances that proper flood alleviation measures will be put in place to protect them and to give them some peace of mind.”
Local Moray Councillor Marc Macrae said: Local Moray Councillor Marc Macrae said: “I visited Garmouth this morning to see first-hand the impact of the heavy rainfall.
“Once again Ross House finds its surrounded by water with nearby agricultural land looking more like paddy fields.
“The sight of villagers wheelbarrowing sandbags to build defences is one that is seen all too often here with some homeowners still recovering from previous floods.
“Talking to villagers I was pleased to hear that Moray Council were organising further pallets of sandbags to be delivered and hope that all possible efforts will be explored to protect people and their properties.”
