Moray MP Douglas Ross has urged residents to get tested for Covid following a "concerning" surge in infection rates across the local area.
NHS Grampian has said today that door-to-door testing is being "heavily considered" to combat rising case numbers in Elgin, which has been described as the "epicentre" of the spread.
There are also rising levels in Lossiemouth, Buckie and Keith. The health board has said there is "uncontrollable, sustained transmission" and there will be deaths if the situation is not brought under control.
As things stand, level three restrictions could remain in place across Moray after May 17 when the rest of Scotland is due to move down to level two.
Scottish Conservative MP for Moray Douglas Ross said:
“The ongoing surge in Covid cases in Moray is very concerning and we need to do everything possible to stem the increases and get the situation under control.
“The fact that door-to-door testing is being considered should act as a stark reminder to everybody just how severe this has become.
"I am not aware of that having happened anywhere else in Scotland during this pandemic.
“The advice is clear. Get tested, and if you do test positive, you must self-isolate.
"Community testing is widely available, and the health board is encouraging people to get tested whether they have symptoms or not. Many people will not display symptoms and could be spreading the disease without knowing it.
“NHS Grampian is also reminding people not to mix indoors or visit other people’s houses.
“We need to get this outbreak back under control, otherwise the situation will only get worse."
