Moray MP Douglas Ross is pleased to have helped residents in Portgordon to secure a return of Post Office services to the village.
Douglas said: “A number of people from Portgordon contacted me in recent months to say that, after the closure of the local shop, the nearest Post Office available to them was in Buckie. This presented a particular problem for anyone relying on public transport.
“I knew that the Post Office had made some enquiries about possibly setting up a service in Portgordon Bowling Club, so I contacted the Chief Executive of the Post Office to stress how valuable an outreach service would be for Portgordon residents.
“It was great to receive confirmation earlier this week that equipment has now been installed in Portordon Bowling Club and that a Post Office outreach service will now operate on Mondays and Thursdays from 9am until 1pm.
“I know that this will make a big difference to people in Portgordon and I’m pleased that I was able to help. The Postmaster is currently using a mobile signal for the equipment, which might cause service to be a little slow, but I am assured that this will be resolved in the coming weeks when a fixed line is connected at the bowling club.”
Marc Macrae Councillor for Fochabers Lhanbryde added: “It was a great blow for the village when the shop closed which also saw the loss of post office counter services.
“With the only other Post Office facilities being in Buckie or Fochabers this clearly had an impact on many on their ability to go about their daily lives and to access postal services which are relied upon by so many.
“I welcome this new Outreach Service, and whilst it will be limited in the days and times it is open, I hope that the villagers will get behind it and hopefully this may lead to the restoration of a fuller service in time.”
