Wishart wants to park indyref2 until after 2021
One of the SNP’s most senior MPs has said the party should shelve its separation plans until after the next Holyrood election.
Writing in the National, Pete Wishart said Nicola Sturgeon should come up with a “credible post-Brexit vision”, adding that a “renewed mandate” for independence should be sought in 2021.
His remarks are in contrast to the First Minister’s refusal to take the threat of another referendum off the table.
The Scottish Conservatives said Ms Sturgeon should heed her MP’s advice and rule out another divisive vote.
Scottish Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser said:
“Pete Wishart’s comments will only add to the confusion over what the SNP’s policy is on a referendum.
“And the trouble is that, while the SNP continues to dither, investment decisions will be put off and more uncertainty will be cast over Scotland’s future.
“Nicola Sturgeon has shown a total failure of leadership on this matter over the summer.
“She now has a responsibility to take control and make it clear to her party that a referendum is off the table for good.”
