Ross gets on his bike for the Poppy Appeal
Local MP Douglas Ross put in some pedal power ahead of Remembrance Sunday events to show his support for the Royal British Legion’s Annual Poppy Appeal.
Commenting, Douglas said: “I am due to attend Remembrance Day Parades in Moray in my official capacity as the area’s Member of Parliament which is something I will be very proud to do, but I was also more than happy to take part in the Poppy Ride which was held in the fantastic surroundings of the Houses of Parliament in London to raise awareness for The Royal British Legion and their 2017 Poppy Appeal.
“Remembrance Sunday is a time when we all come together and remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, but the Poppy Ride helps raise funds for those members of the Armed Forces community who still need our support. It is a very worthwhile cause and something I was delighted to be a part of.”
Douglas said he thoroughly enjoyed the competitive situation: “It was a bit of a challenge as I was racing against other MPs and military service personnel but all that training around the Moray countryside must have paid off as I covered 3.5km in the five minutes allowed, which was near the top of the leader board for MPs in the UK and I was also top of the pile for Scottish Conservative MPs.”
Douglas was in good company racing alongside other MPs and the Director General of The Royal British Legion as well as serving members of The Armed Forces as part of a 12-hour bike ride in Portcullis House in the Parliament to raise money for the national Poppy Appeal
Douglas added: “I would like to thank the Industry and Parliament Trust and The Royal British Legion for arranging this event. The Royal British Legion provides invaluable support to The Armed Forces community; I am pleased to have been able to support such a worthy cause.”
Nick Maher CEO of the IPT said: “The work of The Royal British Legion is essential to the lives of the whole Armed Forces community across the UK and I am delighted that MPs and Peers are supporting us in our efforts to raise money for such a worthwhile cause. The support and enthusiasm from parliamentarians and service men and women has been fantastic’
