Jamie Halcro Johnston calls for Respect for Shop Workers
Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston has called for more respect to be shown to the region’s shop workers.
Speaking in a debate in the Parliament ahead of Respect for Shopworkers Week, the Scottish Conservative MSP said that local shop workers were a vital part of communities across the region and deserved to be treated with respect.
Jamie Halcro Johnston said:
“In the Highlands and Islands, there are a large number of small, independent businesses.
“Shop workers in many of those businesses act not only as a customer service representative but as a security guard, doorkeeper and complaints handler.
“Why should shop workers and other service economy workers put up with sarcasm, rudeness and inappropriate comments?”
Speaking after the debate, Mr Halcro Johnston added:
“Far too many people think it is acceptable to be abusive or disrespectful to shop workers.
“Often that lack of respect can be aimed at the workers and owners of small enterprises who work for long hours running businesses that are open all hours, providing a vital community service.
“These people should be properly respected and we should recognise the valuable role they play in communities across the Highlands and Islands.”
