Halcro Johnston welcomes SNP defeat on ferry funding
Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston welcomed a parliamentary defeat for Scottish Government attempts to kick its long-standing commitment to fair ferry funding into the long grass.
Transport Minister Humza Yousaf and Finance Secretary Derek Mackay disowned their responsibility for the SNP’s previous commitment when challenged to outline their intentions in relation to the pledge made in 2014.
Mr Halcro Johnston pointed to years of delay on fair funding. His amendment, highlighting the importance of inter-island ferries as lifeline links, was also unanimously accepted by the parliament.
Speaking following the debate, Jamie Halcro Johnston said:
“The SNP have attempted to kick the issue of fair ferry funding for Orkney and Shetland into the long grass, hoping that the people of the islands won’t notice.
“Now that their position has been defeated in the parliament, they should reflect on their commitments to the islands and return with real answers. For too long, Ministers have refused to give clear answers – instead choosing to dodge accountability and play politics.
“As an islander myself, I recognise the challenges facing communities across Orkney and Shetland – and remain committed to fighting the islands’ corner in Holyrood. I am pleased that the parliament supported my amendment recognising that our internal ferries are lifeline links.”
