MP raises Nationalist response to Walkers Shortbread in House of Commons
Local MP Douglas Ross has highlighted what he called despicable and unacceptable abuse from Nationalists against this iconic Moray firm after one of their shortbread tin designs featured a Union Jack. Such was the fury of some Nationalists that the UK flag rather than the Saltire was used, the company was forced to put out a press statement.
Commenting after highlighting this with the Leader of the House of Commons, Douglas said: “After some of the pathetic abuse we have seen directed at Walkers this week I wanted to highlight this fantastic local business who have been an integral part of the Moray community since they were established in Aberlour 120 years ago.
“To have so many different brands and designs goes to show the global appeal of this product but some people have becomes so obsessed with flags, particularly since the independence referendum in 2014, that one design featuring a Union Jack could provoke so much apparent range and anger.
“Well I for one am proud that Walkers is based in Moray and from the heart of Speyside they produce a product that is globally recognised. They are a successful Scottish and UK business and that is what I wanted to highlight in the House of Commons.
“Walkers employ hundreds of people in the local area and have put Moray well and truly on the map by sending their products all over the world. They are a credit to Moray.”
Praising Douglas as a great champion for everything to do with Moray and for raising a significant issue for the constituency, Leader of the House of Commons, Andrea Leadsom MP said: “Walkers shortbread is both delicious and a vital UK brand. It’s a fabulous Scottish brand and of course many of their tins are marked with ‘I love Scotland’ and others with a Union Jack and are fabulous for export. We love Walkers!”
