MSP welcomes action on misleading delivery charge adverts
Highlands and Islands Conservative MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston has welcomed the announcement by the Advertising Standards Authority that action has been taken to curb misleading advertising claims around delivery charges.
The agency has issued an enforcement notice which extends to all relevant advertisers across the UK. This will require advertising businesses to take action to ensure that delivery offers are accurate and that small-print terms and conditions do not contradict other claims.
After 31 May, any advertisers breaching the requirements will face enforcement action by the Authority and Trading Standards.
Mr Halcro Johnston, who has campaigned against unfair delivery charges and surcharging in the Highlands and Islands, pointed out that the region was the worst affected in the UK.
Jamie Halcro Johnston said:
“I am pleased that the voices of people in the Highlands and Islands are being heard and that real action is being taken to prevent adverts making misleading claims about deliveries.
“When a business offers UK-wide delivery, this must mean across the whole of the country – not just the parts that are easy to access. Consumers should not have to trawl through the small-print to find out that delivery offers do not apply to them.
“This is just one measure, but shows that there is a real commitment to dealing with many of the delivery issues in remote and rural parts of the country.”
