Scottish Conservative Deputy Leader visits Moray
The deputy leader of the Scottish Conservatives, Jackson Carlaw MSP, has boosted local Conservatives after a busy day spent in Moray. Mr Carlaw was given a guided tour of Johnstons of Elgin and visited the Linkwood Distillery where he celebrated the freeze on whisky duty with local MP Douglas Ross. He then joined a Conservative team which was campaigning in Buckie with local councillor Tim Eagle before rounding off his day with Conservative members and supporters at a supper held at the Eight Acres Hotel in Elgin.
Douglas said: “I was delighted to welcome Jackson back to Moray where we had a great day visiting local businesses and campaigning in Buckie. Jackson, who is acting as interim Leader while Ruth Davidson is on maternity leave, was particularly keen to learn how welcome the duty freeze is to the Scotch whisky industry locally. The tour of Linkwood allowed us to see a distillery that focuses more on blends and isn’t on the visitor trail, but makes a substantial contribution to the whisky industry.
“At Johnstons it was good to see how the business is continuing to expand and it is fantastic that we have such an iconic company based in Elgin. I know that Jackson also made good use of his visit and came ready with a shopping list provided by Mrs Carlaw.”
Jackson Carlaw said: “It was great to join Douglas and the team in Buckie last week, where it was clear that the hard work of elected Conservatives at the local level, Holyrood and in Westminster is delivering for the community. Last week alone, our team delivered a Whisky Freeze, support for the high street, a tax cut for working people and a promise that we will leave the CFP. It is clear in Moray, as with the rest of Scotland, that Scottish Conservatives are delivery for communities where the SNP fail them.’”
Douglas added: “Jackson was on very good form and obviously enjoying the challenge of standing in for Ruth at First Minister’s Questions. We are looking forward to our next electoral challenge which is making Ruth First Minister at the Scottish Parliamentary elections in 2021. It’s good to know that Ruth has such a strong deputy in her team and here in Moray we are certainly up for the fight.”
