Ross welcomes boost to Gift Aid scheme
Moray MP Douglas Ross has welcomed a Government announcement that will significantly increase the benefits that charities will receive from the Gift Aid Small Donation Scheme. The amount for a small gift on which tax relief can be claimed will increase by 50% from £20 to £30 generating millions of pounds of extra revenue
Douglas, who was a member of the House of Commons committee which agreed the change recently, said: “There can be few areas in the country that have a greater number of organisations which will benefit than Moray. We have a wealth of small charities, amateur sports groups and churches all of which rely on small donations to support their activities. This measure will cover cash and contactless donations, the latter of which are increasingly significant in generating income for these good causes.”
The Treasury Minister who made the announcement, Robert Jenrick MP, visited Moray last Autumn and the issue of Gift Aid was discussed during the visit.
Douglas said: “I am really pleased that the minister took on board feedback from me and other representatives who wish to see greater support for the voluntary sector. This is a very good result and will, I’m sure, be widely welcomed by everyone who fundraises for causes close to their heart.
“The Conservatives introduced Gift Aid several decades ago and it is now the most successful charity relief in the world. I’m delighted to have been on the committee which approved this new benefit for charities which means they can earn more from their fundraising.”
