Moray MP Douglas Ross has raised concerns with police and the local council about reports of motorists speeding through Forres.
People living on the town’s St Leonard’s Road have said they are becoming increasingly worried about the volume and pace of vehicles passing close to pedestrians and cyclists.
Residents have said that traffic has become heavier in recent years, with more lorries, cars, and tractors on the 30mph road.
Concerns were raised at a recent meeting of Forres Community Council. Aside from speeding, there were also issues rasied around noise and the hazards of pulling out of driveways into oncoming traffic.
Now, Mr Ross has written to the local Police Scotland inspector and to Moray Council to ask what can be done to address these issues.
Scottish Conservative MP for Moray, Douglas Ross, said:
“I was concerned to hear that residents are reporting an increase in heavy traffic and speeding on St Leonard’s Road.
“Many of those that have raised this have lived in the area for a number of years and have said that there has been a marked increase both in speed and volume.
“The pavements on this road are narrow at points and that can make it concerning for pedestrians, cyclists and particularly parents pushing prams.
“I hope that these reports will be investigated by the local police and the council’s roads team and that residents see some action to address this.”
Scottish Conservative Councillor for Forres, Claire Feaver, said:
"This is something that has been raised with me time and time again.
"I was at the community council meeting when this was discussed and there is a real strength of feeling locally.
"It is not just the volume of traffic and the type of vehicles, but the speed with which they travel down this road. People are genuinely worried for their safety and are fed up of the constant noise.
"I am taking this up with council officers on behalf of local residents to see what can be done to help."
