The Conservative group, working alongside the MAG group on Moray council have shared with other councillors their plans for tourism infrastructure in Moray to ensure that Moray is geared up and ready for the staycations of the future. The plans are being put forward for discussion at the budget meeting on the 3rd March.
Plans include funding 5 new stopover points for caravans and motorhomes, chemical waste disposal points as well as extra staff for servicing the sites, looking after public toilets and litter picking. Finally plans have also been put forward for the hire of portaloos in heavily used locations without access to pubic toilets and for new seagull proof litter bins.
The groups will also ask for a new paper to come to committee on the future of public toilets in Moray.
Commenting on the proposal is leader of the Conservative Group Cllr Tim Eagle;
“Last year we welcomed many tourists to Moray but there were some issues. Communities reported issues with litter, bins overflowing and caravans disposing of toilet waste on rural roads. With our hospitality sector having been through a very rough period it is vital that we support them as much as possible and tourism plays a major part in that”
“That is why this year we recognise the importance of building our tourism offer across Moray, ensuring that we are an open and welcoming location whilst not negatively impacting on communities.”
“Our plans will see a network of stopover points and toilet waste disposal points built across Moray with more planned for the future”
“This will be coupled with increased spending on staff, toilets and bins to ensure we are prepared for whatever this summer and those to come look like.”
“Tourism already sustains many jobs and businesses and has the potential to provide more jobs in the future, it is vital the council play a leading part in making sure Moray is ready”
Further commenting is leader of the MAG group Cllr Derek Ross;
“As a Speyside councillor I have spoken to many local people who recognise the importance of tourism but want to ensure that across Moray we have the facilities in place to support those choosing to holiday in this area.”
"Shutting public toilets has never sat well with me, these are vital facilities which help both local people and tourists and we must make sure that we provide what is needed moving forward”
“This is just the beginning as we put in place the first projects and staff to work towards building a strong tourism offer across Moray”
