Moray MP Douglas Ross has welcomed the publication of a list by the Cabinet Office which includes Elgin as one of 39 towns vying for city status as part of a competition being run in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.
Commenting, Douglas said:
“This is great news for Elgin and brings us a step forward to being awarded UK city status which would bring a wide range of benefits and opportunities and could be a really great boost to local businesses and residents.
“As well as the prestige of being made a city, this could be an enormous advantage to Elgin as previous winners such as Perth have seen their local economies taking advantage from the fresh opportunities and their improved national and global standing.
“There has been a really strong bid developed locally and I’m hopeful that Elgin will receive the recognition it deserves.”
Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Steve Barclay added:
"City status is not only about local pride, it can deliver real levelling up benefits for businesses and the local area which is clear from the high number of applications. A sincere best of luck to all those who have applied.”
