Moray MP Douglas Ross has written to Moray Council demanding urgent action on what has recently become a concerning accident hotspot in Forres.
There have now been seven collisions at the junction of Findhorn Road and Drumduan Road in recent years, which has resulted in vehicles mounting the East verge, colliding with a wire fence and either ending up at rest on the high embankment or hitting trees at the location.
As a result of these road accidents, the occupiers of a house situated only meters away, are living in constant fear as they hear these collisions and the noise as part of the wreckage hits their home.
To date no serious injuries have been caused, but that may only be a matter of time unless action is taken.
Douglas had previously demanded action from Moray Council who responded by committing to introducing cameras to record the actions of drivers, carrying out a speed survey and have a site visit from an engineer.
Douglas is now demanding urgent action alongside local Forres Councillor Kathleen Robertson.
Moray MP Douglas Ross said: “This junction in Forres has become a concerning accident hotspot and there are fears it will only be a matter of time before a serious incident occurs.
“It is completely unacceptable that local residents in this area live in constant fear that one day a vehicle will leave the road, mount the embankment and strike their house.
“I have previously written to Moray Council about these serious safety concerns and they promised to undertake work, including speed surveys and a check of the road camber and design.
“However, in recent weeks there have been another two collisions, two days apart, resulting in one of the vehicles involved leaving the carriageway, striking the wire and post fence and coming to rest against a tree.
“There seems an easy solution to this problem. I am calling on Moray Council to construct a protective barrier along the East verge at this location, which would prevent any vehicles leaving the carriageway going anywhere near the houses situated close by.
“The council must heed these calls as a matter of urgency and finally provide some comfort to residents in this area.”
Local Councillor Kathleen Robertson said: “This situation is deeply concerning for this family in Forres who just want to live in their house in peace.
“The recent incidents could have ended up a whole lot worse. The council cannot wait a moment longer for something truly dreadful to occur as a result of basic safety measures not being put up quickly enough.
“I am determined to work alongside Douglas and this family in my ward to ensure that these accidents become a thing of the past. Currently this junction is known for all the wrong reasons and the council must ensure one family does not keep thinking they are constantly at risk of serious injury.”
