Moray MP Douglas Ross says the time “for dithering and delaying” from the SNP-Green government on dualling the A96 must end.
Douglas’ call comes after a Freedom of Information Request response found that there have been almost 250 accidents on the route in the last five years.
Since 2017/18, a total of 249 accidents of some nature have been recorded, including 15 between April and September this year alone.
The FOI found that 17 of the accidents were fatal, with a further 47 being recorded as either serious or very serious.
Douglas says that the SNP cannot keep “bowing to the demands” of their Green coalition partners and must keep to their previous promise of fully dualling the A96.
He says that this is “absolutely crucial” for the safety of motorists using the road, as well as providing a significant boost to the local economy in Moray.
Moray MP Douglas Ross said: “My thoughts are with anyone who has lost a loved one in an accident on the A96 or those who have suffered injuries.
“It is incredible to discover that almost 250 accidents have taken place on this critical trunk route in just the last five years.
“That should mean an end to the dithering and delaying from SNP ministers. They cannot keep bowing to the demands of their Green coalition partners who have forced them to row back on their previous commitments to dual the A96.
“With deaths and serious accidents occurring with such regularity, there can be no greater evidence to show why this road needs upgraded, and dualled as a matter of urgency.
“It is absolutely crucial for the safety of motorists using this road.
“Dualling the A96 would also give a significant boost to our communities in Moray, who are crying out for improvements to finally be delivered.
“I will keep pushing the SNP-Green government to listen to Moray residents and businesses and get on with dualling the A96 as quickly as possible.”
